Ho Chi Minh City will become the ‘gateway’ of the region and the world
The Central Economic Commission, the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City organized the seminar “Ho Chi Minh City – A vision of the marine economy connecting the international urban chain.” The advantages and limitations for Ho Chi Minh City to create a breakthrough in marine economic development have been pointed out by scientists and financial experts. According to experts, Ho Chi Minh City also needs to overcome many barriers to become the gateway to Southeast Asia.

Specifically, the city has a strategic position on the international maritime map. It is located on the Trans-Asian traffic route and is a potential gateway connecting Busan (Korea) and Tokyo (Japan). However, the current maritime capacity only reaches less than half of the maximum capacity of the Cai Mep – Thi Vai seaport system. This shows that the potential is still tremendous, and the current challenge is to increase cargo accumulation and maritime competition in the region rapidly.
The Council of the Institute of Sustainable Energy and Settlement Research, analysis, and maritime systems in Asia are concentrated in coastal cities such as Singapore, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Macau, Busan, and Tokyo.
In addition, Ho Chi Minh City is located in the Southern critical economic region, consisting of eight provinces, almost forming a “diamond octagon,” embracing the natural core of the Can Gio world biosphere reserve, which is more than 42 miles wide thousand hectares. Therefore, this international urban area – seaport will become a marine economic pole when connecting the global aquatic urban chain from the vision of rapidly developing the chain of coastal metropolitan areas in front of Vung Tau – Can Gio – Go Cong.
In addition, Ho Chi Minh City has also developed a plan to establish an urban marine chain. In addition to the function of a mangrove forest, Can Gio is also a space for developing marine urban areas associated with marine tourism. If you look at Ho Chi Minh City as a modern coastal city, then Can Gio is the only area adjacent to the deep-water Cai Mep – Thi Vai port. At the same time, it is also the point bordering the sea to develop various types of marine economy.
