Over 5,100 billion VND spending on Rach Mieu 2 to shorten travel time to HCM city

Rach Mieu 2 bridge with its 6-lane scale would help control traffic congestion and shorten the duration traveling from HCM city to other provinces like Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, etc., 

As of March 17, People’s Committee of Ben Tre province held a press conference to announce the construction investment project of the Rach Mieu 2 bridge and cnnecting road.

Chairman of Ben Tre Provincial People’s Committee Tran Ngoc Tam said that the Rach Mieu 2 bridge project has been approved by the Ministry of Transport with a total investment of VND 5,175 billion and the collection road approved by Provincial People’s Committee has a total investment of about 1,158 billion VND from state budget. 

Mr. Tran Ngoc Tam said, Rach Mieu 2 bridge is a large and important project, ranked first amongst eleven key projects set forth in the Resolution of XI Party Congress.

“Rach Mieu 2 bridge project would contribute to gradually improving the transport network in the region, meet the increasing transport demand on National Highway 60, promote socio-economic development, ensure national security and defense of Tien Giang and Ben Tre provinces in particular and the Mekong Delta in general; and reduce traffic congestion and accidents as well.

Besides, the project would help shorten the traffic distance from Ho Chi Minh City to Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau”, Mr. Tam said.

As also addressed by head of People’s Committee of Ben Tre province, the investment in constructing a connecting road leading other roads to Rach Mieu 2 bridge contributes to ensuring a convenient connection for residents on both roadsides, in sync with the urban planning in the area which has been implementing and giving a facelift for the city, urban landscape, and regional economic development.

Invested by the Ministry of Transport, Rach Mieu 2 bridge project is expected to commence on March 29.

The total length of Rach Mieu 2 bridge project is about 17.6km long, of which the length of the bridge approach is 2km long and 20.5m wide. The bridge above the middle course of Tien River is designed with a cable-stayed structure and a main span of 270m long and 17.5m wide. Rach Mieu 2 bridge has a scale of 6 lanes (4 lanes for motor vehicles and 2 lanes for rudimentary vehicles) with a design speed of 80km/h.

The project starts from Dong Tam intersection (between National Highway 1 and Provincial Road 870) in Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province and ends on National Highway 60 (Ben Tre City).

Rach Mieu Bridge 2 would be constructed from 2021-2025 and open to traffic in 2025 or at the latest in 2026. 

The construction of Rach Mieu 2 bridge is aimed at reducing the traffic volume on the current one. Nearly 18,000 – 20,000 cars travel across Rach Mieu bridge daily, three times higher than its design.

Under the circumstance of Rach Mieu bridge, Ben Tre province has built a temporary ferry port to “lend a hand”, but traffic jams are still on regular basis, especially on weekends, Tet holidays, and other celebration.
