Samsung to support smart factory development in Vietnam

Fifty enterprises will be supported by Samsung Vietnam to improve their production operation capacity based on technology to develop smart factories in the next two years.

In addition, the Korean electronics group will help Vietnam train 100 experts to advise and improve knowledge and necessary skills to set up smart factories for enterprises.

This is the content of the smart factory cooperation project signed on February 22 by the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Samsung Vietnam.

According to Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, digital transformation trend towards smart factories of manufacturing enterprises is increasingly evident. Covid-19 makes this process even more imperative to ensure an efficient, flexible, cost-effective production process and increase predictability, analysis, and self-regulation.

However, for enterprises in supporting industries, processing, and manufacturing, Mr. Dien assessed, the application of digital transformation is still limited. “Most of these businesses face barriers in terms of lack of digital skills, human resources, technology platforms, digital mindset in production,” he commented.

He has acknowledged that smart factory trend is present, where businesses apply IoT, AI, big data, cloud hostingtechnology solutions to production. Developing according to the smart factory model will help businesses, especially in supporting industries, processing, and manufacturing, meet domestic demand and improve competitiveness in the global value chain.

Samsung Vietnam said that candidate enterprises participating in this support project in packaging, mechanics, and plastic injection… currently only meet the smart factory standard of about 1.5 points. Therefore, these businesses will increase their capacity to 2.5 points in the next two years, equivalent to vendors – suppliers of components for Samsung.

Fifty enterprises will build smart factories by improving and optimizing production processes based on technology, from importing raw materials to producing finished products. According to calculations, the smart factory will help businesses reduce costs, delivery time and increase productivity by 30%.

Supporting Vietnamese businesses to develop smart factories for two years, and in the first year, 26 companies in packaging, electronics, plastic injection, mechanics, and 50 experts are consulted and trained. In the first six months of this year alone, there will be 14 enterprises in some northern localities, such as Bac Ninh, Hanoi, Vinh Phuc, Ha Nam… participating.

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien noted that applying digital technologies in factories does not mean that a digital supply chain will be formed and operated independently. It requires the connection throughout all activities inside and outside the business, from planning to purchasing plans, production, and logistics activities.

Mr. Choi Joo Ho, General Director of Samsung Vietnam Complex suggested that the Government continue to provide policy support for Vietnamese enterprises to be competitive after being trained. According to him, they will help develop Vietnam’s supporting industries.
